I had the distinct honor of meeting then Major Howard while attending Ranger School in 1977 (Ranger Class 1-78 graduate). He was as I recall Camp Commandant during Mountain Phase in Dalonega, Georgia. He was with us in the cold and rain doing PT and patrols...leading the way as he did his entire career. I know many Rangers and soldiers who were fortunate enough to work around and with this legend and thereby became better soldiers, leaders, fathers and through his example continue to contribute to society in an honorable, and worthy way. Once again...thank you sir for the quiet professional you were! Rangers Lead the Way!

I retired December 1, 2008 after serving 25 years in Special Forces. I had the opportunity to meet Col Howard while attending the Q-Course in 1984. My second opportunity was at Panzer Kaserne when I had dinner with him. He is an American hero and I'm very happy to be afforded the chance to be in the presence of such a hero and shake his hand.

I stand and salute you and others like you.
Your courage and bravery has given me renewed hope. I have been unemployed for the last 5 months in fear of losing my home, all kinds of thoughts raced through my mind. I saw your story on the news and the more I researched you heroic exploits the more I regained some of my lost hope and composure . . . dusting myself off and getting back into the fight to secure meaningful employment and move forward in a positive way - "THANK YOU". Whether you know it or not you saved one more . . . it is I, your "can do" attitude has saved me these past few weeks. Again - "Thank You"

Thank You to all of you who have risked ALL to preserve our proud and free way of life. I can only hope that those who take what you did for the rest of us for granted will wake up before it is too late to allow your sacrifices to have been in vain. God Bless you all, and may God Bless America!

There were only a few unAmericans who may have thought you were not a hero. True Americans know you were a hero. I am a viet nam vet, not a hero. We all owe you.

I saw a piece on the news today about Col. Howard. He should have been awarded all three Medals of Honor he was nominated for. He should make all present and past service members very proud.
