May this great man rest in peace, honored even more in death than he was in life. A great nation has no choice but to defend itself and its friends, for there are always those who will seek glory by attacking the strong. A nation must have heros and must honor them. Here's to this fallen soldier and to the family that raised and supported him. God bless you all.

I had never heard of Robert Howard until I saw the news story of his death on NBC. I watched the interview on his tribute site at the military library in Chicago. What a Patriot! What a soldier! What an American! God Speed Colonel. Your mission on earth is now complete. Rest in Peace.

COL Howard writes: Rock and Vivian, No sympathy! We said it all many different times and many different ways and you know I mean it from the heart. You are very special people in my life and you have shown me most graciously. It was a privilege to have known both of you and my very best wishes to both of you. God bless, Bob Howard

Dear COL Howard,
My wife Vivian and I wish you all the best and pray for your peace and comfort this holiday season.
Iím sorry I missed you in Iraq, if I could have gotten away I would have. There are a few things I wanted to say to you and if I could in person I would, but I know you are not well enough and must have many who would like to see you as well.
First, the things you have done for me in the way of inspiration and motivation have carried me through from a young Ranger to a 54 year old Ranger. I have always considered you my Father figure and the person I most wanted to emulate as a Soldier. You mean so much to me and thousands of other Soldiers that have had the honor to serve with you. My hope is that you know there is a Nation that cares about you for all that you have done for it and I am just one of many that is saddened to hear about your current situation. I want to say to you, thank you for recruiting me into the Rangers, inspiring me with your presence and promoting me to SGM. All three are highlights of my life. The things you did for our nation are much more than the most honorable actions you did in combat, you have inspired, trained and lead thousands and we are very grateful God placed you in our presence. Your faithful follower and loving Ranger son, Ranger Rock Shiffer

Colonel Howard has honored himself, his nation, his comrades, and his family -- and I am certain his brave actions made it better for all of us who served in Vietnam. He represented the best this nation has to offer. My thoughts and wishes are with his family. Our nation needs more like him.

Colonel Howardís exploits in close combat epitomize what Special Forces ultimately is all about. His repeated personal sacrifices on the intense two way rifle range are Legendary. He is truly a Great American and will always be remembered as one of our best, if not THE best. He can now finally rest as he is with his former comrades-in-arms, who have gone before him, in Valhalla. Rest in peace, Colonel Howard, you have always led the way and left a lasting Legacy for todayís SOF gunslingers. You will always be remembered!
